The TFTC2025: Symposium on Traffic Flow Theory and Characteristics will be held in Cairns, Australia, 7-9 July 2025. The congerence focuses on the theme "Advancing Traffic Flow Theory for a Sustainable Future", co-hosted by the University of Queensland and the University of New South Wales.
The symposium builds on the success of previous summer symposiums that have taken place in Amsterdam, Netherlands (2023); Virtually (2020–22); Lausanne, Switzerland (2019); Woods Hole, Massachusetts (2018); Evanston, Illinois (2017); Sydney, Australia (2016); Kobe, Japan (2015); Portland, Oregon (2014); Fort Lauderdale, Florida (2012); Annecy, France (2010); and the Greenshields Symposium in Woods Hole, Massachusetts (2008).
The TFTC2025 symposium will be held after TRISTAN XII and CASPT2025 in Japan. This arrangement provides an excellent opportunity for researchers and practitioners attending the conferences in Japan to extend their trip and join the summer meeting in Australia, fostering meaningful academic and professional connections across the two events.
The main theme of the symposium will center on traffic flow theory for sustainable mobility, addressing the urgent need for decarbonization and the future-proofing of transportation systems. As cities face growing challenges related to environmental sustainability and climate change, this meeting will explore innovative traffic flow theories and practices to support these critical goals. Topics such as multi-modal integration, electric vehicles, micromobility modes, active transportation, environmental impacts, and advanced modeling techniques will take center stage.
The program will feature a summer/winter school for students on Monday 7 July followed by plenary talks, technical sessions, the committee mid-year meeting on Tuesday 8 July and Wednesday 9 July with plenty of opportunities for networking and collaboration. Detailed program to be shared in the coming months.
